Psychological Concepts: Tells

Some live poker players develop concerns about playing poker online, feeling that their innate reading ability will be of no help. Since they cannot see their opponents, they think they cannot pick up on tells-- subconscious cues players emit that give away the strength of their hand.

In fact, there are online poker tells that savvy players can take advantage of in much the same way that players exploit live tells. One such tell is the “strong means weak” tell.

What Is “Strong Means Weak” in Poker?

The classic novice tell is known as, “weak means strong, strong means weak.” What this means, is that players trying to deceive their opponents will typically act opposite to the strength of their hand. That is, if they are very excited about the hand they will appear disinterested. If they are bluffing, they will look directly at you, daring you to call.

How Does “Strong Means Weak” Work in Online Poker?

Virtually all tells you will be able discover in an online poker room relate to the speed and frequency of betting. Strong means weak in online poker means, for example, that a player who hits a big hand may take a long pause before finally betting or raising.

The idea is he wants you to think he is very worried about his hand and doesn’t know what to do. If a player pauses and then checks or calls, he is probably not as strong. He wants you to believe that he considered betting and thought better of it, in the hopes that you will also decide not to bet.

In contrast, a player who bets out almost instantly may be bluffing. They hope you will read their fast bet as force and put them on a very strong hand.

Things to Know About the “Strong Means Weak” Tell in Online Poker

These are general guidelines, but as always, their effectiveness is dependent on the player. Some players may bet quickly when they have a big hand in the hopes of inducing you to call without thinking. Some players may take a long time before every decision. Generate a hypothesis and then try to find concrete evidence to tie it to a player before acting on it, if possible.
