Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo Rules

The rules presented here are eligible whether you play at an online casino or in a live casino. Even if most online casinos specialize in casino games such as blackjack, roulette and slots some of them also has poker on the menu.

Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo (also known as 7-card stud 8 or Better) is a game where the pot is split between the best five card high hand and the best five card low hand. But as the name suggest the highest counting card in a low hand cant be higher than a eight, for instance the hand A-2-6-7-8 is a valid low hand but A-2-3-4-9 isn’t. Low hands are counted from the top down so 2-4-5-6-7 beats A-2-3-5-8.

The objective is thus making the best possible low and high hand from the seven cards you are holding. If you for example are holding the cards A-A-2-3-4-6-6, your best high hand is A-A-6-6-4 and your best low hand is A-2-3-4-6. One of the best possible Hi/Lo hands is the straight flush with A-2-3-4-5 where you most likely will win the entire pot, e.g. “scoop”. Flushes and straights doesn’t count against a low hand but pairs do, so for instance if you hold A-A-A-2-2-3-4, you cant make a five card hand that doesn’t contain a pair and thus wont qualify for the low portion of the pot. Note that there is always a high portion of the pot but if there is no qualifying low hand then there is no low portion.

Apart from the above exception the game is played almost exactly like an ordinary game of Seven Card stud and is usually played as fixed limit although it can be found as pot-limit also.

A round of Seven Card Hi/Lo fixed limit is played like this:

1. All players put in an ante, which usually is about 1/5 of the small bet.

2. Each player is first dealt two cards face down and then one card face up.

3. The player with the lowest card starts the betting round and has the option to either put in a bet called “bring in” that is half of a small bet or put in a “full” small bet. Then every player, clockwise, has the option to fold, call or raise (if the original bet is a bring in, then the raise is up to the sum of a small bet and is called “fill up”.) When all players have acted the next betting round commences.

4. All the remaining players in the hand receives a fourth card “fourth street” face up. Now the player with the best high hand, a pair of aces being the best possible hand at the moment, starts the betting round. Although there is one major difference at this point between Seven Card Stud High where you can make a big bet if anyone has a pair showing and Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo where you still only can make a small bet, regardless if anyone has pair or not.

5. Now a fifth card “fifth street” is dealt face up and again the best high hand commences the betting round and all bets are now big bets.

6. Each player receives a sixth card “face up and again the best high hand starts betting.

7. A seventh card, “seventh street or the river” is dealt face down, and again the player that has the best high hand stars the betting. If there are two or more players left when the betting round is over a showdown takes place where the player that bet last or made the last raise shows his cards first.

Now here is the tricky part: half of the pot is won by the player that has the best high hand and the other half is won by the player that shows the best low hand. If the same player has the best high and low hand then he scoops. If two or more players should have the same low, or for that matter high hand, they split that portion of the pot equally between them. Once a hand is finished another hand begins with all the players again paying the ante and so forth.
