Top 10 Poker Tips
(February 13, 2007)
Whether it is played online or at real tables Poker offers thrilling entertainment and great challenge. As it is a card game, mastering it isn’t enough; you need a bit of luck too. When you take a seat at one of the tables no one can guarantee you that you will win or loose, but by keeping eye on the game and following the next tips, you might increase your winning chances and leave the table gloriously. And the most important thing: don't be addicted, it is just a game. If you have gambling problems, visit the National Council on Problem Gambling.
So here are the tips:
Learn the poker terms before starting to play the game, know what hand, play, pot, hand tie, ante, rake and showdown mean as the smarter you are the more confident is the way towards winning.
When you take a seat at a poker table or choose a game if playing online, be sure of you’re skills. The higher the stakes at a game, so does the average skill level of the players sitting around you increase. Don’t miss the fun and take a defeat just because you don’t understand what is going on around you.
Don’t play too many hands especially if you are a beginner. Better concentrate on higher value starting hands than too many. When gambling, playing more doesn't necessary mean winning more, it usually means losing more.
Pay attention on your partners and regarding to you bring sense into the play, not emotions. It can be great help when learning to read on others moves or faces, as learning how your opponents play is a key element in Poker. Watch how others bet, how much they bet, what positions, moves they make when betting.
Try to see the overall table, not just your hand. For beginners this trick is a bit hard, but once understood the basics it's incredibly important to look at what's going on at the table.
Don't stay in a hand just for being already in it. You can't win a pot based on the simple fact, that you throw money at it. Sometimes the money you've already put in doesn’t belong to you anymore, so don’t throw out more.
Don't bluff just to show that you can. A bluff can be very effective when used rarely and where there is a seemingly low risk of being called by your opponent. There is no rule saying you must do it.
Learn how to fold a hand. Many beginners keep betting regardless of the board or what their opponent’s actions are suggesting. Avoid this.
Pay attention on tournaments, follow games on TV, watch how pros are playing as sharpening your skills is always good. Keep notes if you like, as not everybody was born as a skilled poker player. It is never too late to learn, however.
A problem regarding mostly no-limit players would be the too obvious predictability. Even at lower stakes, you are bound to be at the same table as a couple of decent players who pick up on betting patterns if you always bet the same way. Mix up your style a bit from time to time to throw people off. If you play online poker switch tables often so you are frequently up against fresh opponents.
