Tournament Poker Tips - Texas Hold’em

In this segment we would like to present some of the most important things to keep in mind when playing in a Texas Hold’em Tournament. Some of the points are basic and known to many, while others are less straightforward. We asked several of our editors to share what they consider to be the best tips for competitive poker players. We hope you find their advice useful!
Patience. As the blinds move up, many Texas Hold’em tournament players lose patience and think they have to act. This often results in an early tournament exit. Wait for the strong hands and then play aggressively.
Steal Blinds. When you’re seated at a late position, make plays for the blinds. This enables you to save on your next post and buys a bit of time while you wait for that nice hand.
Sit out and watch. Every time you join a new table in a competition format, you have the right to sit out the first round. Use this time to scan your opponents and see if you can pick up anything useful about their style of play.
Pick on the small stacks. You want to use your advantage over players who are vulnerable. Force them to go all in, pick up a few small pots, and eliminate others from the event. It will feel good!
Exercise caution in the late rounds. Once you get to late stages of a match and you have a decent-size stack, play conservatively and wait for you chance. At this point, short stacks will be looking to move all in with the hope of rebounding. Chip leaders will be sitting on anything that they know may not be the nuts. You need to stay disciplined and capitalize when the opportunity presents itself.
Aggressive play is rewarded. Be a bettor, not a caller. If you set the tone of the hand, you will be given the chance to win uncontested pots and frighten off unsure players.
Go all-in. Many novice players are reluctant to go all-in. Granted, it’s risky but it’s also a major part of the game. Of course, the key is to recognize when you have the best hand at the table.
Have a game plan. At the onset of the tournament, decide how you will play at each stage. Will you play tight at the beginning and then become more aggressive as you progress? Make the necessary adjustments when thing don’t go entirely as planned.
Identify your opponents’ weaknesses. If you spot a player who is overly aggressive or too conservative, use it against them. Those who reveal their betting tendencies don’t stand a chance against players who are simultaneously consistent and unpredictable.
