Poker Player Profile: Mike Matusow
(June 18, 2006)
"I believe in my heart I'm one of the top five No Limit Holdem players in the World. It's the only thing I do good. I'm an idiot when it comes to anything else."
- Mike the Mouth
Mike “The Mouth” Matusow couldn’t be called anything else. He is the ultimate poker brat. He is totally incapable of being quiet, he always wears his heart on his sleeve, and this is why we love him.
Mike lives in Las Vegas, where he got his start in poker as a dealer. Like so many pros, he took what he learned from watching others to the opposite side of the table and has yet to look back. He's a regular player at the Bellagio, and he is the owner of two World Series of Poker Bracelets and is considered by many (especially himself) as one of the best Omaha players in the world. He finished 9th at the 2005 World Series of Poker Main Event and captured the 2005 WSOP tournament of champions.
Due to his controversial demeanor and erratic behavior, Mike not only distributes abuse but receives all kinds of it himself. One of the best places to get a feel for the love/hate feelings that Mike inspires is at any one of the many bulletin boards, one of our favorites being this
one.
One of Mike’s most well-known incidents came at the 2005 WSOP, where he was penalized for a violation of the much-ridiculed F-Bomb Rule. In true Matusow fashion, he uttered the word not once, but four times, including one final and emphatic F-You! directed at the floor manager! He’s been one of our heroes ever since.
Mike is also known in the poker world for his spectacular misjudgments at the poker table, even when he seems to be on the cusp of a important victory. These episodes have been referred to as the Matusow Meltdown. Despite these critical errors, The Mouth has been one of the most consistent winners in professional competitive poker. Here’s a rundown of some of Mike’s most impressive poker achievements to date:
